A Secret Admirer

Four hands employed in a selfless calling, (1)
Two graceful & nurturing, two unyielding &; muscular,
Playmates of a lifetime forging a dream by the shore.
A calm ocean and the morning sun watch along...
Grains of sand that once lay as a heap, orphaned & unnoticed, (5)
Now stand as a Castle. So handsome, stately &; grown in years,
Fast escaping the captivity of your architects' moist footsteps,
You spend the early hours coming to grips with your existence
To stumble upon a satisfying identity by mid day
At the sight of dancing sun rays - pearls on distant waters. (10)
With other waves I surge to catch your first glimpse,
But ebb reluctantly in low tides, as if confined by societal norms;
Cycles, as if those of an unfolding teenage,
Of stringing and unstringing an instrument,
Of gushing ashore but receding with an unsung song; (15)
An untold tale of excitement, for hesitance nips it in the bud,
Falling short all afternoon but getting closer each time
To something bigger, something better. A marvelous sand Castle.
Hopeful. If an entire lifetime were wrapped in a day,
Then dusk must have in store all its glory, and surely, (20)
As the sun paints the skies purple, marking an omen,
And reaches to the depths of the vastness of my vessel,
With a strangely determined momentum, in pursuit
Of a dream, of a reason, as if of a life partner,
On uncharted, unobstructed frontiers my spirit runs carefree (25)
But stops only to wash your majestic feet with tranquil waters.
Yes! then I turn around, to return merrily with other waves
Like a flock of girls, gossiping, chuckling, reminiscing, story-telling
Fondly of my transformation, my adventure, my affair.
For if I aspire - to break these confines, to grow more ambitious, (30)
Untamed, avaricious and demanding of reciprocation,
- To look you in the eye, embrace your walls,
Kiss your brow and whisper to you my secret obsession,
Such unleashed passions will leave you destroyed & myself turbid
Your tumbling, dissolving walls will mock the memories I locked away (35)
As the Pacific monster gulps your grains of sand,
My transient fascination will end in permanant broken reality
And on this dark, bleak night even the moon will refuse,
To reflect from my waters and beautify my miserable fate.
I will be left alone, in despair, only to find comfort (40)
In what was, but can never once again be -
The sandcastle of my dreams. The delicate love of my life.
Yes! hence I just turn around, to return merrily with other waves
For you were born to be a show piece
And I, a secret admirer! (45)

This attempt is quite different from the previous two... the first & obvious difference is that it is non-rhyming. But I've also tried to make it a more indirect style of story-telling by hiding it in layers of figures of speech.

To start: "Four hands" (synecdoche)... who they represent is hinted in their description (line 2), in the phrase "playmates of a lifetime" (3) & best in the word "orphaned" (5)... they represent parents :P (too much of a stretch? or is it used well?)

There are many more... can you find any? I'm very curious to know (a) how effective my use of metaphors/personifications, etc was & more importantly (b) what you make of them... so feel free to share your creativity. (I *might post this Sunday to give it away) As always, any feedback/critique is welcome... :-)

On a different note, the semester starts soon & I might not be able to write again for a while... but lets see, may be this time I'll have that 25th hr in my day ;-) Thanks for reading.

  1. It is a very tough puzzle :)

There are two things.. one the castle and the other the waves.. the castle is kind of stationary.. maybe its the parents' version of you.. the waves are trying to see it.. maybe it is you.. but this part is very cryptic.. im not sure if i got it..

Morning sun - Beginning of your life
Calm ocean - maybe society but i am surprised at the word 'calm' there..
Grains of sand ... castle - your development (maybe just physical here)
architect - parents.. but moist because they still are 'emotional' about you
mid day - mid phase of your career
Maybe you are watching your career like a third person (waves)
Low tides - you limit your own progress.. careful not to over stress?
lines +/- 15 - the gap between your ambitions, passion and how you move towards it.. there is something that is stalling you.. not sure what
20 +/- is quite straight forward
majestic feet - there is somebody that you are trying to please out of your generosity (or maybe out of an emotional compulsion)

a marvelous sand castle - where you want to be

30-35 ,. some secrets you don't want to share but would love to..

One amazing thing that I noticed was .. mid day comes exactly in the middle of the poem.. not sure if it was intentional..

Overall I am not sure if I am equipped fully to understand your cryptic poem.. :)

  2. This is a day & half late :/ but still...

ARANYA First I just want to post the interpretation you emailed me because it is *VERY* interesting, almost fitting the poem better than my initial intent!! lol :P I knew you would leave me awe-struck <3
"Waves of the Pacific -an ocean of subjects of a kingdom, a poor young girl (wave) falling in love with the prince (castle)... capitalization of the word Castle & washing his feet almost as if she regards him as 'Parmeshwar' (lol), the hesitance of making public displays of her affection lines 30-35 stemming from 'societal confines', 'turbid' eluding to the girl's fear of a tainted character, 'a dark bleak night' eluding to abandonment from society & her act of finally turning away.. but love doesn't diminish & she remains a 'secret admirer'."

& Kalakurey (impressive?) BALA, quite close! Heres a crude explanation: Say the poem is about a guy...
X = his sub conscious = the wave, the narrator.... who talks to
Y = the guy's "good side" - the one he tries to portray consciously.
I picked the Sand Castle to be that conscious self Y - one described by all the positive adjectives (=living up to everyone's expectations, well liked, "grown in years" (=mature), etc). And correct! the idea is to have Y be stationary - not risk taking/not adventurous, not voluntarily indulging in the ocean of temptations BUT still always entirely vulnerable to destruction by it (to be "gulped by the Pacific monster", 36).

    1. Architects - parents; a selfless calling, forging a dream - bringing up their child (as Y)
    2. ocean is 'calm' - b/c the sub conscious is always 'kept in check' by the dos & don'ts instructed by parents until Y begins to 'escape their captivity' ... then the waves/X musters courage and begin to 'ebb'... but still in 'low tides' because Y has come to realize & obey 'societal norms'
    3. moist footsteps - bingo Bala!
    4. pearls in the 'distant' water - temptations ahead (all the glitters in the distant may not be gold :P)
    5. +/-15 - pretty straightforward, internal battles of an 'unfolding teenage'... sub conscious constantly tries to surface ('gush ashore')
    6. 'dusk... all its glory' - peak of Y's career/most successful point in his life. According to the sub conscious, Y will be the most vulnerable at this point that all the glory & 'coloring of the sky' will "mark an omen" & 'reach to the depths' of the ocean of temptations... to arouse the subconscious, preparing it to attack with 'With a strangely determined momentum' (hinting at pride brings a fall!)
    7. uncharted, unobstructed frontiers my spirit runs carefree - this is closest the sub conscious comes to conquering Y... but the next moment/line it is so awe-struck & tamed that it is almost as if it were there to wash Y's feet... Line 26-40: Y is so strongly grounded in principles & filled with goodness that it impresses & convinces X not to wash it away. The sub conscious not only turns away/suppresses itself voluntarily, but claims to be "transformed" & love struck ("affair") by Y (28-29). It resists surfacing back as if a girl shy of making public displays of affection (30-35) & fearing punishment (37-42) from an orthodox society... bingo Aranya!
The sub conscious's final confession/acceptance of 'defeat' is in lines 44-45...
***An unwavering adherence to moral, ethical and idealogical standards out weighs physical vulnerabilities commanding respect & secret admiration of all evil (& that begins at 'home', with taming the sub conscious).

& the mid day in the middle of the poem was unintentional, keen observation!

  3. 'Excellent attempt' will be two words too short.. keep the puzzles coming..

"not voluntarily indulging in the ocean of temptations BUT still always entirely vulnerable to destruction by it" - Beautiful

But I don't agree on the 'calm' ocean.. if waves are the subconscious, ocean is not made up of waves alone..

  4. Thanks :-) will try my best.
& Good point! In retrospect, I have a pretty weak justification for the usage of the word. hmm hindsight is always 20/20 :P
